1968 – Martha Vasconcellos from Brazil
Brazilian beauty queen Martha Maria Cordeiro Vasconcellos beating 64 contestants in 1968 to become her country’s second Miss Universe winner, after Ieda Vargas won in 1963. Right after winning, she called up her family and boyfriend, and said that she was already homesick, but had to live in New York for a year, as per pageant rules. She flew home in 1969 and got married just days later! She disappeared from the public eye, having worked as a victims rights counsellor in Boston, but is now retired and lives in Brazil.
