1970 – Marisol Malaret from Puerto Rico
From the ’70s through the ’90s, the pageant became a month-long affair, including the preliminary contests and rehearsals. The 1970 crown winner Marisol was the first Puerto Rican and Caribbean woman to win! After she went home, she was welcomed by 50,000 of her countrymen at the airport! She worked in the Puerto Rican entertainment industry for a couple of years, graced many national and international magazine covers and is still a motivational speaker for aspiring business leaders and young women.
