1977 – Janelle Commissiong from Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidadian model Janelle Commissiong won the 1977 Miss Universe competition and thus became the first black woman to ever win this prestigious beauty pageant. Before the pageant, she studied fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. During her tenure, she was an advocate for world peace and black rights. She served her country thereafter working with the Tourism Development Board. Trinidad & Tobago even issued three postage stamps in her honor.
