1954 – Miriam Stevenson from USA
Miriam Stevenson, now 89, would become the first American lady to win the Miss Universe title in 1954, after becoming Miss USA earlier that same year. The win got her a year-long film contract with Universal Studios, but she eventually decided to quit her Hollywood career soon after, as she wanted to return home to finish her education. After getting her degree from South Carolina’s Lander University, she found work at local television programs and that is where she met her husband Donald, and they had two children. She was active in the modeling circles, but after the 70s, she dropped off the radar.
