1963 – Iêda Maria Vargas from Brazil
A native of Rio Grande do Sul, Iêda Maria Vargas was the first Brazilian to win the Miss Universe competition that was held at Miami Beach, Florida in 1963. This Miss Brazil would thus become the first beauty queen to win any major international beauty pageant. During her term, she got to inaugurate the famed Capital Plaza Mall in Maryland. However, after getting married, she left the spotlight to lead a quieter life, but occasionally made appearances at national international events. In 2000, she suffered a stroke, but she is said to be doing okay now.
