1965 – Apasra Hongsakula from Thailand
This is the year when the Miss Universe pageant separated from the Miss USA contest to become its own entity. It also began announcing the semi-finalists on the eve of the main event, who go on to compete in the evening-gown and swimsuit competition. Miss Universe 1965 was Miss Thialand, Apasra Hongsakula, and she was the first Thai beauty to win. She returned to the same pageant stage in 1973 and 1979 as a judge. With connections to Thai royalty and politicians, Aparsa remains a well-known figure in her country.
