16. Brazil
The Brazilian Armed Forces are the largest defense forces in Latin America and the second largest in the Americas, after the United States. All 18-year-olds have a service obligation and they have to serve in the country’s armed forces for 10-12 months minimum. They are composed of The Brazilian Army, Brazilian Navy, and the Brazilian Air Force. And then there’s the Military Police and Military Firefighters Corps who are all under the purview of the Ministry of Defence. Just a reminder that wars are very rare in South America.
