Bob Ross – U.S. Air Force
The late American painter Robert Norman Ross is best remembered for hosting The Joy of Painting. When he was 18, Ross joined the U.S. Air Force, where he was part of the medical records technicians unit. He soon served at the Eielson Air Force Base as a first sergeant.
The Alaskan snow-covered mountains would later become recurring elements in his art. The brief work breaks he took every day helped him shape his quick-painting technique. Ross had roles that required him to be a mean and tough guy, but he decided never to raise his voice after leaving the military.
