Don Knotts – U.S. Army

Sheriff Barney Fife was one of the most notable roles that Don Knotts portrayed in The Andy Griffith Show. Knotts joined the U.S. Army in 1943, in the wake of the Second World War, but he never made it to any combat fields.

There was a myth that started floating around, claiming that Knotts had been a Marine Corps Drill instructor. While he was indeed a military man, it is not clear where the claims that he was part of the Marines came from. Knotts died in 2006 at 81.
