Ted Williams – U.S. Marine Corps

The late Theodore Williams was a left fielder who stayed with the Boston Red Sox throughout his 19-year career as a player. Williams’ career was interrupted when he took up military service during the Korean War and the Second World War.

Williams was first drafted in 1942 under the 1-A classification, which essentially meant that he was available for unrestricted service. He managed to get reclassified under the Selective Service System (Class 3-A). Williams ended up becoming a Marine Corps fighter pilot when he was recalled to duty in 1952 during the Korean War.
