The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson aired for about three decades, and its the show that Johnny Carson is best known for hosting. Long before that, Carson joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, and he trained as an officer. Carson was stationed in the Pacific aboard the USS Pennsylvania.
The war ended while Carson was on a troopship, where he decoded encrypted messages. Carson had plans of becoming a magician after leaving the war, and he even got to perform a trick for James V. Forrestal, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy at the time.
