Alec Guinness – Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve

Star Wars fans are familiar with Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character that Alec Guinness brought to life. However, before Guinness started acting, he served as part of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in the wake of World War II.

Guinness was a seaman who rose to the rank of a sub-lieutenant during his time with the Navy. Guinness was granted leave mid-service when he performed in the Broadway play Flare Path, recounting the RAF bomb command, by Terence Rattigan. At the age of 86, Guinness lost the battle to liver cancer in 2000.
