Bea Arthur – U.S. Marines Women’s Reserves
The late Beatrice Arthur’s career started in 1948 on Broadway, but she had put in time with the U.S. Marines Women’s Reserve during the Second World War. She joined in 1943 and was stationed at the Marines Washington, D.C. headquarters servings as a typist.
Arthur requested a transfer to the North Carolina Motor Transport School, where she became a truck driver. She also served as a dispatcher stationed at Cherry Point from 1944 to 1945. Arthur was discharged in September 1945 when she had risen to the staff sergeant rank.
